Fans Return to Football for First Time in Nine Months

8 December 2020

There’s no denying Conronavirus has and is still continuing to have a major impact on our daily lives – from a new three-tiered system in the UK to complete lockdown in europe, but after a long nine months of waiting, football fans were welcomed back into the stadium to cheer on their teams in a move many millions are waiting to experience! And while the media should’ve been focusing on this momentous and joyous occasion, there were a handful of fans who went out of their way to ensure there were different headlines.

Strong condemnation

Widespread condemnation came soon after the Championship clash between Millwall and Derby as the behaviour of some Millwall supporters saw attentions focusing on racism instead of football. As players took a knee prior to kick-off, some fans made it abundently clear they weren’t happy with the gensture and wanted their voices heard – and those vouces were heard!   The FA said it “supports all players and staff who wish to take a stand against discrimination in a respectful manner, which includes taking of the knee, and strongly condemns the behaviours of any spectators that actively voice their opposition to such activities”.

Boys in Blue

But it wasn’t only the antics in the stands that drew the attention of the police, it was what was being posted on social media too! During the airing of the football match, a 25-year old from Derby, UK, took to Facebook to insight violence by posting derogatory comments aimed at the taking of the knee. Derbyshire Police have revealled this man has since been arrested on suspicion of racially aggrevated public order offences.

Derby County’s Colin Kazim-Richards called the scenes from the stands an “absolute disgrace”, and Millwall’s manager, Gary Rowett, said: “The players have come out and said they don’t support the political aspect, but they do support the anti-discrimination aspect of it. The club does an enormous amount of work on anti-racism.”
